Adeen Crochet
Care guide
Handmade crochet lasts for years if you wash it correctly — and can be ruined in a single wrong cycle. Here is what works.
Cotton pieces
Bags, coasters, table runners, baskets and baby items are cotton. They take a cold machine wash inside a laundry bag on a gentle cycle.
What cotton cannot take is heat and agitation together — that is what causes shrinkage. Reshape while damp and dry flat, never on a hanger, because the weight of the water will stretch the piece permanently.
Amigurumi and stuffed toys
Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent. Press the water out inside a towel rather than wringing — wringing shifts the stuffing and it never quite goes back.
Dry flat, away from direct sun. Never tumble dry acrylic on anything above low: the fibres go limp and shiny, and there is no way back from that.
Flowers and bouquets
Never wash them. Dust with a soft dry brush, or a hairdryer on the cool setting held well back.
Keep them out of direct sunlight. Cotton dye fades in a sunny window over a year or two, particularly the reds and pinks.
Store bouquets in the box they arrived in if you are putting them away.
Rope and macramé
Dust or vacuum on the lowest setting. Spot clean with a barely damp cloth.
Do not machine wash rope baskets — they lose their shape and will not stand up again.
For plant hangers, water the plant at the sink rather than in place, so the rope stays dry.
